Last Tuesday, the Department of Education, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Council for Environmental Quality, announced its intentions to create a Green Ribbon Schools program. Modeled after the Blue Ribbon Schools program which recognizes academic distinction, the Green Ribbon Schools program will be a voluntary award, recognizing schools that are demonstrating excellence – or making notable improvement – toward sustainability. Though still in development, the program will evaluate schools across four categories: environmental education; energy efficiency and resource conservation; healthy operations and maintenance; and community engagement and service learning.

The Bartlett Award is an annual award given by the National Environmental Education Foundation to an outstanding middle or high school teacher who successfully integrates environmental education into his/her curriculum and engages students in interdisciplinary solutions to environmental problems. Young "Green Giant" Felix Finkbeiner to Visit German School Washington, D.C. on Feb. 3

Children Can Change the World - Stop Talking. Start Planting

Potomac, Md. − Children are the future, but they can also influence the present as Felix Finkbeiner, 13, from Munich, Germany has taught us. It all began in January 2007, when 9-year-old Felix and his two siblings started the student initiative Plant-for-the-Planet (www.plant-for-the-planet.org) in Germany with the goal of planting one million trees in three years. The children were inspired by the Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, who has planted more than 30 million to reverse deforestation. He had reached his goal by the time he was 12. Felix's fame and commitment have earned him the title of Junior Board member for the United Nations Environment Programme, or UNEP, to support the UN Billion Tree Campaign, and a nomination by the British newspaper The Observer as one of the Top Ten on the ECO Power List 2011.

Now, Felix's organization has gone international, and he promotes his cause of climate justice all over the world, including Europe, Mexico, South Korea and the United States. Children in more than 56 countries have already signed on. Tomorrow, Felix will come to the German School Washington, D.C. to spread his message and inspire our students about doing something good for the environment. Of course, the German School is already very dedicated to green activities and technologies. A LEED (Silver) certified science building that will open this year, and an award-winning recycling program are tangible evidence of this commitment.

After a healthy lunch, he will address sixth and seventh graders with a brief presentation and discussion, followed by a hands-on workshop to let the kids know what they can do to make this world a better place – one tree at a time. Change often starts small; in the words of Felix: "Let's plant millions of trees worldwide – a million in each country!"

POSITION DUTIES: The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Watershed Services, Conservation

Education Program, is currently accepting applications for a Program Manager I functioning as the Program

Director. The Program works to instill a natural resources stewardship in Maryland’s youth, especially with

regard to the Chesapeake Bay. This position is responsible for the planning, development, and management of

the activities, programs and the budget administration of the Program. The Director works closely with the

Maryland State Department of Education to ensure that DNR programs targeted at schools meet student and

teacher needs, as well as DNR objectives. The Director provides advice and guidance on state, regional and

national policy as it relates to environmental education and is the lead staff for the Governor’s Partnership for

Children in Nature program.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, environment or

natural resources related field.

Experience: Five years of experience in environmental education.

Notes: 1. Additional experience in environmental education or professional environmental work may be

substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university in outdoor or

environmental education may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year

basis for the up to two years of the required experience.

PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to applicants with teaching and curriculum development experience,

science education background and familiarity with the Maryland education standards.

Position:

MAEOE is currently seeking an energetic and creative individual to join our dynamic team as the Full-Time Maryland Green School Awards Program Coordinator, to start immediately. The Maryland Green School Program Coordinator serves as the program director, public spokesperson, and will oversee all aspects of the program’s operations. The coordinator will report directly to the MAEOE Executive Director as a key member of a small and growing team and will provide program support and assistance to the leadership of the Maryland Green Schools Committee of the Board of Directors

Responsibilities:

• Recruit and support schools as they work through the application process

• Build key partnerships with city and community-based partners

• Participate in organizational growth and program development

• Teach Maryland Green School Workshops/Make Presentations

• Demonstrated experience building and managing programs with positive outcomes for participants

• An innovative thinker with strong initiative and demonstrated flexibility, able to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, evolving environment

• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to solve problems, mediate conflicts and exercise sound judgment

• Demonstrated ability to create and sustain effective collaborations and partnerships

• Excellent communication skills—oral, written, and public speaking

Seneca Creek Nature School (SCNS) plans to open in 2011 as a public charter school serving elementary-aged children in Montgomery County, Maryland. Charter schools are free, publicly-funded secular schools that do not screen applicants. SCNS will follow State of Maryland academic goals and standardized testing requirements. As a charter school, SCNS has the flexibility to apply different methods of achieving these goals.

Enrollment now open for next round of competition

A sixth-grade class from Iowa recently returned from Disneyland® as winners of the first national Disney's Planet Challenge environmental competition, and enrollment is now open for the program's 2010-11 competition.

Thousands of classrooms from districts in all 50 states participated in Disney's Planet Challenge. Mrs. Julie Schnedler's sixth-grade class at Mediapolis Community School in rural Iowa was selected as the winner by a judging committee made up of scientists, environmental experts and educators including representatives from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and WestEd K-12 Alliance.

Mrs. Schnedler's class focused on saving the Northern Bobwhite Quail population, which is declining due to harsh weather and decreased prairie land. To restore the quails' natural habitat, students collected information through computer research and field work. With the help of community members, the class restored acres of existing conservation space in Luckenbill Woods by conducting a controlled burn to prepare the land and replanting native vegetation that will benefit local quails.

She currently focuses on the Alliance for Childhood, a broad-based advocacy group that brings together educators, health professionals and others to work on common concerns, such as the need to restore creative play and other healthy essentials to childhood. Availability of information on safe renovation and abatement of buildings that have PCB-containing caulk

EPA has recently posted new information on its Web site on safe renovation and abatement of buildings that have polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-containing caulk. This information is meant to provide contractors, parents, teachers, and school administrators a general overview of the practices a contractor should consider when conducting the renovation and/or abatement of a building that has PCB-containing caulk. Ordinary renovation and maintenance activities involving the removal of PCB-containing caulk and the surrounding contaminated substrate (brick, masonry, cinder block, wood, etc.) can create dust that contains PCBs, which can expose children and adults. PCBs have been demonstrated to cause a variety of adverse health effects, including cancer in animals. PCBs have also been shown to cause a number of serious non-cancer health effects in animals, including effects on the immune system, reproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system, and other health effects.

This information is designed to assist building owners and abatement contractors who may be handling PCB-containing or PCB-contaminated building materials during planned renovation, abatement, or repair activities or planned PCB abatement efforts in older buildings. The Web site includes information on:

Facts about PCBs in Caulk - Provides basic information on PCBs and how to identify PCB-containing materials, primarily caulk.
Steps to Safe Renovation and Repair Activities - Provides guidance on safe work practices during renovation or repair projects in older buildings where PCB-containing caulk and PCB-contaminated surrounding materials could be encountered.
How to Test for PCBs and Characterize Suspect Materials - Discusses building characterization and sampling procedures to identify PCBs and determine the extent of contamination.
Steps to Safe PCB Abatement Activities - Provides information on steps that should be considered for projects intended to remove and dispose of known or suspected PCB-containing caulk (i.e., PCB abatement activities). You can find the PCB regulations that support this information at Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 761 (40 CFR Part 761).

Time Magazine ‘Heroes of the Environment’ William McDonough and Michael Braungart will describe their vision for green building and ecologically intelligent design at the German Embassy on Monday, April 19.

The world renowned authorities on sustainable building will be joined by experts including Stefan Behnisch, described as ‘the most promising European architect currently introducing state of the art techniques of sustainable architecture to the USA’, and the sculptor, artist, and interdisciplinary planner, Herbert Dreiseitl.

To mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the experts from Germany and the US will discuss sustainable building in the USA as a global market force, and the future of transatlantic cooperation in this field.

The all-day event is part of the German government’s “Transatlantic Climate Bridge” initiative. Michelle Moore, Federal Environmental Executive of the White House, will welcome guests as the key note speaker.

Discussions between local experts will follow, focusing on business opportunities for
German/American companies, including zero energy building projects undertaken in the US that have been built into repeatable and profitable business models.

Germany has long been a leader in energy efficient and zero net energy buildings, and is keen to increase the synergy and cooperation with the US. This symposium aims to show the strides already being made in US green building efforts, and that environmentally responsible and resource-efficient structures can be accessible to all.

MICA and Morgan State University will present sustainable solutions to community redevelopment needs. Throughout the semester, BGW was able to connect some of Baltimore’s leaders in local sustainability efforts with the students through a series of engaging conversations in the classroom. With a focus on the much needed redevelopment of what was once our city’s northern border, the North Avenue corridor, the discussion touched on the following topics; transportation, infrastructure, waste management, local agriculture, community initiatives and the history of North Avenue. Students were then challenged to come up with sustainable solutions to some of the issues grappled with in class. These projects will be presented throughout the day and in the evening as an art opening.

Toxic Chemical Reform: A look at how chemicals affect our health and what we can do to change it!

Chemicals have been in the news a lot lately, from baby bottles to cosmetics to that "new car smell." But is there really a problem? The federal law governing toxic chemicals is 34-years old and has never been updated. During that time the EPA has only required testing of 200 of the 62,000 chemicals in use at the time the law passed and it's only restricted 5. Meanwhile in peer-reviewed health and medical journals the scientific evidence has been piling up linking common chemicals to chronic health problems that are on the rise, like childhood cancer and early puberty. Join us for a discussion where we will hear from leading professionals at the local, state, and federal level.

Reflective Practitioners: Environmental Educators Share Their Professional
Development Needs for the Next Five Years

What do environmental educators most need to learn to advance their own
performance, as well as the field´s credibility? Dr. Lynette Fleming thinks
she knows. More than 400 environmental educators from across the United
States contributed to her 2009 Environmental Education Professional
Development Needs and Priorities Study, an assessment that Fleming says
gives the field "an opportunity to reshape professional development to
respond to current needs."

According to Fleming, who started conducting teacher workshops in the early
1970s, "The typical approach to professional development has been mostly
someone saying, `This is what you need.´ The dialogue about what is really
needed and how to provide it is often missing."

The study, funded by the Environmental Education and Training Partnership
(EETAP), offers plenty of fodder for that dialogue, identifying specific
priorities and laying out an ambitious slate of recommendations for
responding to them.

Fleming, whose decades of experience with evaluation, program development,
and training uniquely qualified her to spearhead the study, said, "It was
heartening to see that a lot of things we´ve said are important for 30 years
are at the top of the priority list. But as we continue to analyze the data,
it´s clear that much more needs to be done to compile what we know as a
field and make that knowledge more broadly accessible."

Manhattan School Wins NY “Green Cup” Energy Conservation Challenge
PS 166 Achieves 18% Reduction in Electricity Consumption

NEW YORK, NY – PS 166, a public elementary school on New York’s Upper West Side, is New York City’s regional winner of the 4th annual Green Cup Challenge (GCC) - a national inter-school energy conservation competition designed to reduce schools’ electricity use.

“PS 166 achieved a 17.75% energy reduction,” says Ozgem Ornektekin, New York Department of Education’s Director of Sustainability. “The school saved $1,845 on its electricity bill (15,380 kilowatt hours), and prevented 20,609 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the environment. PS 166 did an amazing job,” says Ornektekin

The GCC is sponsored by the nonprofit Green Schools Alliance, which unites students to take action on climate change and the environment.

For 4 weeks (January 15 - February 12 - peak winter energy usage) 14 schools in New York City (53 in New York State and 161 nationally) took weekly meter readings and looked for ways to save electricity. PS 166 posted signs reminding everyone to turn off unnecessary lights, set thermostats to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, power down computers, and close windows and doors. Custodial staff turned off heat and boilers nightly. A Green Team comprised of parents, science teachers, and 5th grade “Climate Captains” walked through the school every Wednesday to see how people were doing. Parents and teachers received weekly communiqués about the school’s progress. A large 3-D “Powerometer” built by Kindergarten parent Kieran O’Connor, was displayed in the lobby to show whether meter readings were going up or down.

Katy Perry, GCC’s Program Coordinator, used a carbon calculator to assess PS 166’s impact. “We found that PS 166’s energy saving was equal to taking 2 cars off the road for one year, planting 10 trees, or replacing 374 incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents,” says Perry. “If one school can have this kind of impact in 4 weeks, imagine if all the 132,600 schools across the U.S. joined the GCC. That is our hope for the future,” she says.

Emily Fano, Co-Chair of PS 166’s Green Committee and coordinator of the school’s GCC, is passionate about environmental education and shares Perry’s hope. “It was so inspiring to see the way our community embraced this Challenge, especially the kids," she says. Fano received numerous e-mails from fellow parents who said their children were turning lights off at home.

“What kids do at school goes home with them, and that’s important,” says Ornektekin.

PS 166 is already planning its next green event. On April 21st, in honor of Earth Day’s 40th anniversary, the school will host noted climate scientist Professor Marco Tedesco. Tedesco – a Kindergarten parent at the school - has studied melting trends in the Arctic, Antarctica and Greenland. His work has been cited internationally in the context of climate change, water resources management, weather forecasting and projections of sea level rise.
“We’re very proud of our school’s achievements,” says PS 166’s Principal Debbie Hand. "Our school-wide greening projects, including the GCC, have enriched our school, strengthened our community, and made us all more conscious about the way we live our lives," she says.

At the 10^th Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Tools for Schools National Symposium, students were honored for their leadership and creativity in raising public awareness of radon. We're Looking for A Few Good Speakers
If you have an innovative, interesting or just plain old good idea, or a great story you'd like to share with the recycling community in Maryland, we'd love to hear from you. We're seeking presenters for our monthly webinar series as well as our annual conference.

Webinars run around 30 minutes with 10-15 minutes for a powerpoint presentation and another 10-15 minutes for Q&A. Each webinar is presented twice in the designated month, usually around mid-day. (We use GoToWebinar as our presentation platform.) Webinars are free to anyone in the recycling community and offer the presenter an opportunity to share useful information and get their company name out in front of the a lot of folks.

Conference Sessions run 60-90 minutes and may involve a single or multiple presenters or a panel and typically include both presentation and Q&A. Last year, several speakers used the webinars as a "teaser" (and practice) for their conference presentation. This year's conference will be held June 24-25, 2010 at the Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum Heights, MD (near BWI Airport). The conference is open to any and all members of the Maryland recycling community and features both sessions and exhibits. Click here for a recap of the 2009 conference.

The Evaluation Process
The MRN Program Advisory Team evaluates all submissions based on the following criteria: overall quality/creativity, relevance to the industry, well-defined focus, innovative or practical applications of material, timeliness of the topic and speaker qualifications.

To be considered as a speaker, your program must be educational in nature — that is, sales presentations will not be accepted. The final program selections and notifications will made within 3-4 weeks of receipt for webinar presentations and no later than March 1 for the 2010 annual conference.

Speaker Expenses
Webinar presenters receive a 50% discount on a conference registration should they wish to attend. Conference presenters receive a complimentary conference registration (over $200 in value). All presenters receive the personal satisfaction of sharing their knowledge with their peers as well as the acknowledgement and gratitude of the Maryland recycling community.

USGBC Announces Recipients of 2009 Excellence in Green Building Education Recognition Awards and Incentive Grants
Recognizes Innovative Green Building Curricula from Pre-K through College; Provides Financial Support for Promising New Programs

Washington, DC, (September 17, 2009) – The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded the 2009 Excellence in Green Building Curriculum Recognition Awards and Incentive Grants to organizations and institutions spurring existing green building education projects, activities or programs, and developing new green building curricula. The initiative is a central component of USGBC’s commitment to identify and disseminate innovative green building curricula to educators across the country.

“Through this initiative, USGBC is recognizing those organizations that are taking the lead in the development of innovative green building knowledge and resources,” said Rebecca Flora, Senior Vice President for Education & Research, USGBC. “The extraordinary rise in green building in recent years has accelerated the need for relevant and engaging educational programs, and all of our participating organizations are playing an active role in helping USGBC meet this important need.”

Recognition Awards honor existing green building education projects, activities or programs, and includes a $1,000 honorarium. The Incentive Grants provide monetary support of $10,000 each for schools or organizations to develop new green building curricula. The number of submissions increased over 30 percent in 2009, a significant rise in only the second year of the initiative.

“The growing interest and the impressive number of high-quality submissions indicates the program is reaching a wide-range of educators from many disciplines and that curricula and programs across the country and at various stages in the education process are using green buildings as innovative teaching tools,” noted Margot McDonald, chair of USGBC’s Formal Education Committee and Professor of Architecture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Winning organizations and institutions include a pre-K and kindergarten curriculum using the school’s LEED Platinum certification to educate students on the value of a green building; a community college’s efforts to expand an existing construction technology program to include a focus on alternative and renewable energy sources; and a multi-year architecture school’s initiative to create a net-zero energy modular classroom prototype that architecture students will use as design studio space, creating a living laboratory.

The recognition awards were judged on demonstrated success, ability to be replicated, scope of influence, advancement of green principles within the educational community and the fostering of a collaborative or interdisciplinary approach. Grant proposals were evaluated on originality, collaborative or interdisciplinary approach, scope of influence, feasibility and the ability to be replicated.

Green Schools Network Available

EcoSchools US, is a non-profit and independent advocacy network that promotes the greening of K-12 educational facilities and daycare centers.

The organization’s website, www.ecoschools.us, provides a new and integrated platform to exchange contacts, ideas and resources between green schools experts, advocates and school system employees. The site also features related news, presentations, events, training, sponsorship and grant opportunities. A special resources section provides videos, press articles and interviews.

There is no cost for membership in EcoSchools US, but application is subject to approval by the network. Approved members gain access to a faculty of renowned green schools experts offering presentations and free consultations on the subject of sustainable school design, operations and education.

The EcoSchools network was founded recently by Anja Caldwell, a LEED-certified architect trained in Germany, and an acclaimed expert in green building design and implementation for schools. She calls EcoSchools US an independent pollinator that is spreading green ideas and information “like a busy bee.” Ms. Caldwell recognizes that because of budget and schedule constraints, sustainability has not become a priority in the majority of American school districts.

It is believed that the independent EcoSchools network will make readily available the necessary tools and training desperately needed by school system decision-makers, facility managers, teachers and staff, thereby enabling them to move forward with sustainable design, while further demonstrating sustainable leadership, all without wasting valuable time and resources in an unnecessary learning curve.

Back to School Guide to PVC-Free School Supplies

On Tuesday August 4th, CHEJ is releasing a 2nd annual Back to School Guide to PVC-Free School Supplies as part of our new PVC-Free Schools Campaign.

The guide features the most common back to school products made out of PVC, and a selection of safer PVC-free products in 20+ product categories. We’re also gonna have a handy wallet version of it for folks to download. This is a guide/mini-report we’re releasing to give parents an easy way to find safer PVC and phthalate-free back to school products for their kids. We're also releasing it to build pressure on retailers and manufacturers of PVC school supplies to go PVC-free. We’re gonna be doing targeted national and regional media outreach along with blogger/social media networking promotion.

We're inviting groups to help promote and co-release the guide to help advance their own work and support the campaign. Ways your group can plug in if interested:

1) Release the guide locally/regionally/in your state to the media. We can provide our national press materials to work off of for a local/regional/state release.

2) Sending an e-mail to your supporters and activists letting them know about it after it's released on August 4th. We can provide some model language for folks to work from.

3) Posting a banner/badge on your organization's website, facebook, or blog page. We'll have a banner/badge a week before the release for you to download.

4) Posting Facebook links and/or Tweets about the new guide when it's released. We'll have model language folks can work from.

5) Pass out copies of it to your supporters at events.

The People's Garden in Washington, D.C.

On Earth Day 2009, The Growing Connection (TGC) participated in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm To Fork Festival at USDA headquarters in Washington, D.C. The People's Garden was unveiled during the festival at the Whitten Building, and featured organic vegetable gardens, including TGC EarthBoxes planted with materials that are OMRI-certified for organic growing.
