Rising Currents: Projects for New York’s Waterfront

Architecture and Design Galleries, third floor

MoMA and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center joined forces to address one of the most urgent challenges facing the nation’s largest city: sea-level rise resulting from global climate change. Though the national debate on infrastructure is currently focused on “shovel-ready” projects that will stimulate the economy, we now have an important opportunity to foster new research and fresh thinking about the use of New York City's harbor and coastline. As in past economic recessions, construction has slowed dramatically in New York, and much of the city’s remarkable pool of architectural talent is available to focus on innovation. http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1031

Webinar: Green Construction Series: Pioneering the Platinum Path for Healthcare – A 2010 Update

Co-hosted by Green Guide for Health Care – Earn 1.5 CEUs from AIA.  Completed in 2007, the new Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin is the only inpatient hospital to achieve LEED platinum level certification. The facility is part of a 700 acre new urbanist development on the brownfield site of a former municipal airport. The contextual low rise structure is pierced by six courtyards, each of which has a distinct landscape inspired by the native plants from the different eco-regions of the hospital’s 46 county service area – thus connecting families to the familiar, while educating them about the broader region.

Sustainable Community Development Projects

MICA and Morgan State University will present sustainable solutions to community redevelopment needs.  Throughout the semester, BGW was able to connect some of Baltimore’s leaders in local sustainability efforts with the students through a series of engaging conversations in the classroom.  With a focus on the much needed redevelopment of what was once our city’s northern border, the North Avenue corridor, the discussion touched on the following topics; transportation, infrastructure, waste management, local agriculture, community initiatives and the history of North Avenue.  Students were then challenged to come up with sustainable solutions to some of the issues grappled with in class.  These projects will be presented throughout the day and in the evening as an art opening.

Toxic Chemical Reform: A look at how chemicals affect our health and what we can do to change it!

Chemicals have been in the news a lot lately, from baby bottles to cosmetics to that "new car smell." But is there really a problem? The federal law governing toxic chemicals is 34-years old and has never been updated. During that time the EPA has only required testing of 200 of the 62,000 chemicals in use at the time the law passed and it's only restricted 5. Meanwhile in peer-reviewed health and medical journals the scientific evidence has been piling up linking common chemicals to chronic health problems that are on the rise, like childhood cancer and early puberty.  Join us for a discussion where we will hear from leading professionals at the local, state, and federal level.

Going Green – A Case Study Presentation and Lessons Learned New Construction – Owner Occupied Facility.   Going Green with a new building is not a "no-brainer." Hundreds of decisions are needed in response to challenges in programming, design, construction, operations and management. It requires commitment and a different way of thinking from the conventional. The respected social service organization, Healthcare for the Homeless (HCH), made the commitment to go green with its newly opened facility in Baltimore. It took dozens of brains to figure out how to deliver a LEED Gold building for a non-profit organization, with limited budget, in a very tight, urban setting.  Register here

Submission Deadline: Design Competition:   Mowing to Growing: Reinventing the American Lawn

The competition is launched in the context of larger issues concerning the environment, global food production and the imperative to generate a sense of community in our urban and suburban neighborhoods. From Mowing to Growing is not meant to transform each lawn into a garden, but to open us up to the possibilities of self-sustenance, organic growth, and perpetual change. In particular, it seeks specific technical, urbanistic, and architectural strategies not simply for the food production required to feed the cities and suburbs, but the possibilities of diet, agriculture, and retrofitted facilities that could achieve that level within the constraints of the local climate. Eligibility: Professionals and students of all fields are eligible to submit. However, there will be two separate categories of judging: one for professionals and college students and the second for high school students.  Registration Fee: $150 – Professional teams, $50 – per high school student team; Awards: $10,000 – Professional Prize, $1,000 – Student Prize http://www.oneprize.org

If you're thinking about a green remodel, get a great new DVD: "The Forever Home: Going Green." It’s a refreshing look at a SF Bay Area home remodeling project. The planning and architecture consider not only the needs of the home, but also those of the environment and the home's surroundings. A green house for an extraordinary couple. Extras on the DVD include a conversation with Brian Gitt, CEO of BuildItGreen. Watch a preview clip and purchase the 27 minute DVD at http://www.pamwaltonproductions.com
